Professional Experience
Nina Kapoor joined KP as a lobbyist in early 2010 to work with clients in the energy, environmental and transportation arenas. Prior to joining KP, Ms. Kapoor worked as a consultant to the Assembly Committee on Utilities and Commerce where she advised the Chairman and Members of the committee and their staff on energy and telecommunications policy. During her tenure with the committee, Ms. Kapoor oversaw informational hearings pertaining to the hundreds of millions of dollars in federal economic stimulus funding received by California for energy-related programs and on California’s first-in-the-nation energy efficiency standards for televisions.
Ms. Kapoor previously worked for Assembly Member Felipe Fuentes for whom she staffed energy and environmental legislation including bills pertaining to the Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) and feed-in tariffs. Her duties also included advising the Assembly Member on energy, environmental and clean-technology policy. Ms. Kapoor also served as a Senate Fellow in the office of Senator S. Joseph Simitian where she staffed high-visibility legislation pertaining to the renewables portfolio standard (RPS) and transportation safety.
Prior to her work in the Legislature Ms. Kapoor worked as a research assistant at the University of California, Sacramento Center under Dr. Gary Dymski on a study that developed an economic diversification strategy for a Native American tribe that has been largely dependent upon tribal gaming revenue.
Education
Ms. Kapoor holds two Bachelors of Arts degrees in Economics and Political Science from the University of California, San Diego where she graduated with highest distinction. Ms. Kapoor’s honors thesis developed and then executed a methodology for determining the social cost of nuclear energy in order to assist in policy-related decision-making. Ms. Kapoor also received the highly regarded Undergraduate Research Scholar Award for her research on the practice of honor killings in Jordan.
During her time at University of California, San Diego Nina was very actively involved in her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, as well as student government. She also took time away from San Diego twice; once to study abroad at Cambridge University in England where she studied international monetary policy and again to participate in the UC Sacramento Scholar Intern Program where she worked full-time on the Assembly Committee on Public Safety.
